Diesels for the Texas Mexican Railway

Whitcomb Boxcab built in 1939 powered by a first generation Baldwin 6 cylinder VO engine.
The first generation VO engine had a 12 1/2" bore, later engines had a 12 3/4" bore.

EVEN Diesel-electric road en-
 gines for the Texas-Mexican
 Railway have just been de-
livered by the Rochelle, Illinois,
plant of The Whitcomb Locomo-
tive Company, subsidiary of The
Baldwin Locomotive Works. The

delivery of these locomotives makes the Texas-
Mexican Railway Company one of the first
American railroads whose motive power is
completely Dieselized.
Each of the 0-8-0 engines has 660 horse-
power and all air entering the engine com-
partment is filtered to keep out sand. The
engines have double-end control and may be
operated in tandem when the train weight is
increased beyond the capacity of a single
locomotive.
The Texas-Mexican is a 165-mile road oper-
ating between Laredo and Corpus Christi,
Texas. Among the railroads with which it con-
nects are the Southern Pacific Lines, The Mis-
souri Pacific System and the National Railways
of Mexico.
