              Robert E. Lee's Railroad goes Diesel
FROM steam to diesel-electrics overnight - that's the
story in a nutshell of what took place down in Old
Virginia on the Chesapeake Western Railway on Decem-
ber 2, 1946. On that date the Chesapeake Western ended
fifty years of transportation service with steam locomo-
tives and completely dieselized its operations by placing
in service the first of three Baldwin 660-hp diesel-electric
locomotives, thereby retiring the six 4-8-0 type steam
