It takes all three to sup- port balanced operation and serve the public with transportation. In recent years the attention of all depart- ments has turned to Diesel-electrics for road, switching and transfer service. Modern light weight trains have jarred the adamant public interest and aroused an appreciation of the place that the Transportation Industry holds in the economics of daily life. |
Many milestones have been passed on the road of progress during the last decade. New high-speed coach trains and deluxe all-pull- man trains have countered the major inroads of the private automobile in passenger traffic. The operating ratio for passenger traffic, which in many cases shows a higher output than in- take of money, is being whittled down. New equipment and fast schedules are making many new friends. New business is being attracted to the railroads. Diesel-electric road locomotives are built with fuel and water capacities for sustained high-speed overland runs, with fuel stops about every 700 miles.
