I headed to the north end of Burns before the train departed to be sure to be clear of morning traffic in town. I chased the train as far as the start of Poison Creek Canyon, where the main road diverges from the railroad. The train speed at that point was in the 25 to 30 MPH range. There was a paralleling gravel road, but it was snow covered and my rental Chevette was not up to the task.

I rejoined the line near the Summit tunnel (also snowed in) and after a seemingly interminable wait, #4 appeared and the chase was on to Seneca passing through Trout Creek, the broad Silvies valley, and down the scenic Silvies River canyon. A light snowfall a few days prior had left enough snow covering the track to occasionally be engaged by #4's plow.
