RS-4-TC: Road Switcher - 4 Axle - Transportation Corps Built at Eddystone from July 1953 to January 1955. - Caterpillar D397, supercharged V12, 500 hp (400 hp for traction) - Westinghouse generator & traction motors - adjustable gauge trucks (all units) - about 60 tons The builder's plates were labeled "BLH". The construction numbers are from the Whitcomb series of construction numbers. Baldwin SLD (Small Locomotive Division) continued to use construction numbers in this series, after Whitcomb was moved to Eddystone. [21] photo by: Ed Jarvis Units 1247-1276 were built for domestic use. Units 4001-4044 were equipped for foreign use. They were equipped heaters and were able to mount foreign couplers. Unit 1281 named the "General Nathanael Greene" was an experimental prototype with a hydraulic torque converter transmission. Its construction number, 40754, is from the Whitcomb series of numbers for mechcanical and hydraulic transmission locomotives. [21] Rebuilt units, offically designated by the militray as RS-4-TC-1A [21], have a Caterpillar 3508, turbocharged V8, 500hp diesel engine. Rebuilding was contracted out to Construction and Mining Services (C & M Serv.), East St. Louis IL or done at the Tooele Army Depot (TEAD) shops, UT.

Long out of use, coupled to track a laying machine. Of the 17 RS-4-TCs sent to Europe and North Africa 15 were returned to the USA in 1978. The 4039 now in Tunisia and the 4038 now in Spain could be the 2 not returned.
