Production began in 1939 using the 567 engine. When diesel switcher
production resumed after the war time restrictions in 1945 the NW2

    Phases
The Yardlimit would like to thank Brian Nicholson for contributing these
excellent example photos and articulate commentary.

Phase I - BN no.504 - built in 1939, this unit has straight stacks applied by the railroad. No louvres in the hood, and a 2-stage taper to the cab. Note: I believe a phase I had rounded deck plates which is not apparent in this view.

Phase II - B&M no.1200 - a classic phase II, no hood louvres, conical stacks and the 2-stage hood taper to the cab.

Phase III - Hillsdale County no.1976 - louvres in the hood have no 'letterboard gap' as on phases IV & V, 2-step taper back to the cab. In my experience the phase III is the hardest phase to come by after the phase I.

Phase IV - B&M no.1212 - shows the phase IV features, 'letterboard gap' in the hood louvres, 2-step taper back to the cab. The most numerous
    phase of the NW2.

Phase V - Lehigh Valley no.180 - shows the phase V features of 'letterboard gap' louvres and a single taper back to the cab. These were the final modifications to the NW2 line before replaced in the EMD catalogue by the SW7.
