Alco S5
The S5 prototype was Alco-Schenectady plant switcher #6
"Unlike the 244, Alco tested the 251 for several years before actually
introducing it to customers. Development work on the 251 was begun when
the 244 was still giving Alco customers alot of problems and was regarded
as a handicap to Alco. Beside running the 251 on the Alco test stand at
Schenectady perhaps as early as 1953 or earlier (and this was a 6-cylinder
251, I believe, and not a 12-cylinder 251), the company also installed a
6-251 in one of its shop switchers, #6, as early as 1953. Very few photos
of #6 seem to exist, and for some reason the locomotive was ultimately,
scrapped by Atlas Wrecking Company, a local scrapper at the Port of Albany
at a fairly young age."
