Baldwin Road Diesels for Russia ... Baldwin Road Diesels for Russia ...
    1946

At the end of WWII the US armed services ordered 30 road freight diesels for export to Russia to help rebuild the Russian railroad system. They were Baldwin’s first export diesels. These 1000 hp units were powered with an 8 cylinder VO engine and rode on 5 foot gauge Commonwealth C-type trucks.
This model was only built for the Russian export order, see Baldwin class 0-6-6-0 1000/1 DE. The Russians called these Class Db.

This ad depicts a cab unit that appears to be a "Centipede", no doubt based on Seaboard 4500, the center-cab is the prototype for the DT6-6-2000 as in the ad below and a switcher that would be an 8-cylinder normally aspirated unit judging by the four exhaust stacks, prehaps a DS4-4-1000(NA) introducted in 1946

Number 100 was the prototype for the DT6-6-2000. It was build to the specifications of the EJ&E and placed in service on May 13, 1946.
    - weight 363,300 lbs.
    - length 70’-6”
    - starting tractive effort 108,000 lbs.
    - cost $173,000
Unlike production DT6-6-2000 units #100 was powered by twin 608NA diesels and had no crossover walkways at each end.

The illustrations for these ads is of Seaboard 4500, the prototype DR12-8-3000 built. Ordered by Seaboard in June 1945 and delivered in December of that year, c/n 71579. The DR12-8-3000 was the first model with the "Babyface" cab and powered by 600-series diesels, using twin 1500 hp 608SC prime movers.
The 2-D+D-2 wheel arrangement lead to the DR12-8-3000's "Centipede" nickname. Seaboard 4500 differed from subsequent Centipedes in having full-height air intakes and longer wheelbase lead and trailing trucks.
